How can I stop my drains from blocking?

Sometimes there are a few simple steps you can take to prevent your drains from getting blocked and here at Vortex Jetting & Drainage we’ve put together a list of measures that can help prevent blockages in your drains or pipework.

Kitchen pipework:

Kitchen pipes can easily get blocked up by cooking fats, oil and food waste.

1. Install a food waste collector. This can help prevent food waste entering the pipework and causing blockages in the waste trap.

2. Avoid pouring cooking fats down the sink. If you can, pour cool cooking fats into a suitable container and dispose of it responsibly. Or better still, why not collect all the cooking fats and use them to make fat balls for garden birds? Simply mix with some bird food and put it out for the birds. Remember to keep it off the ground.

4. After washing up, run plenty of hot water down the sink after its emptied to help flush any fat particles out through your pipework.

Bathroom pipework

1. Keep plug holes and shower drains clear of hair and debris

2. Run the shower for a few seconds after you've showered to flush through any soap or hair residue

3. Run the hot tap for a minute or two each week to flush out sinks/baths and showers and make sure it's all draining away.

Toilets

1. Only use toilet paper and not excessive amounts

2. ½ flush for number 1’s

3. Full flush for number 2’s at all times

4. If the water level takes a long time to drain away, wait until it returns to normal level and second flush to help move it all along the pipework

5. Avoid disposing of any wipes down the toilet

6. Avoid clip-on toilet cleaners

Outside Drain Gullies

1. Use a leaf cover

2. Clear off grate covers regularly

3. Flush gullies with a bucket of water to clear any sediments

4. If you see fat build up, clean with hot water from a kettle or keep the hot tap running for a while

5. Remove stones debris from the bottom of gullies

If any of the above methods don't work and you’re still experiencing problems, or if you would just rather get a professional to do it for you Vortex Jetting & Drainage is here to help.
